3D Printing

foto 3D tlačiarneIn the Regional Library in Žilina, we offer 3D printing for non-commercial purposes for registered users. We own two printers – Original Prusa i3 MK2, Original Prusa Mini+ and Original Prusa MK4 S which are placed on the first floor across from the staircase. The maximal size of the base is 18×18 cm and 25×21 cm (width and depth). We use PLA filament which is the most often used type of filaments. It is very firm, easy to print with, and biodegradable.

What is 3D printing?

3D printing is an additive manufacturing process – an object is formed by gradual material adding. The thread (filament, usually made from plastic) is being warmed and melted. The printer then stacks the filament layers on top of each other and gradually forms the product.

Rules of 3D printing

  • The user must secure the models for 3D printing on their own. You can download models (thingiverse.com prusaprinters.com; pinshape.com; myminifactory.com; youmagine.com) or create them (tinkercad.com– the program works online without installing; freecadweb.org – the program needs to be installed).
  • The user is responsible for the product design and any mistakes in the model construction that would result in poor quality printing are not the library’s fault.
  • Send the printing design in .stl format to projekty@krajskakniznicazilina.sk
  • Afterwards you will receive a questionnaire in which you specify the requested size, color, etc.
  • fotoThe model will be printed monochromatically. The color selection may vary.
  • A librarian accepts or declines the order. We do not print models which are contrary to the SR and EU legislation and the copyright law. We also do not print sexually explicit material, falsifications, weapons (including props, accessories, and toys), and models that are obscene or inappropriate.
  • The pickup time and date depend on the time required for the specific model and the number of currently placed orders. We only print during operating hours, so we cannot print very large models that would take more than 7 hours to print.
  • This is not a self-service; therefore, the user cannot use their own memory devices to print.

3D printing price list

obrázokWe charge 0,50 € for half an hour of printing (opening price). The amount will be added to the user’s account when the order is received. The finished product can be picked up at the central loan desk where the customer pays for their order.

What you can print

The use of 3D printing is wide – you can print all kinds of models, key chains, figures from games and movies, but also household items (hooks, stoppers, caps, spare parts), lost components for board games or toys, mobile phone stands, cookie cutters, cake decorations, etc.
